Sorry, SOLDSir Alfred Gilbert, a noted sculptor, worked, for a time, in Italy and came to see new possibilities for medallic art. In 1881 he created his first medal, a cast portrait of Matthew Ridley Corbet, a painter. Although his output of medals was small, his impact on medallic art in Britain was significant. When he was commissioned to create the Jubilee medal for the Art Union of London, he departed from the prevailing, formal classicism and introduced a softer, romantic style that was influenced by developments on the continent. This new approach drew the interest of other British Artists and led to a brief renaissance of medallic art in Britain.
