He studied art over the objections of his parents. He was a pupil of S?bastien Cornu, Devaulx and Falgui?re. He exhibited at the Salon and won a medal in 1879. He won a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. He was an artist who worked in various media. As a medallist, Peter is best known for his depictions of animals. He became professor of sculpture at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieur des Beaux-Arts in 1901 and was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur. Peter died in 1918.

Bois Durci a darkwood-like material that is made from finely ground wood mixed with abinder, such as egg or blood albumen. ?It waspatented, in Paris in 1855, by Lepage and wasused to make various decorative items, including medallions, at twofactories in France, until about 1927. Objectsmade from bois durci were created in steel molds and compressedwhilst being heated by steam.
