Marie-Alexandre Coudray was born in 1864. He studied at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts and was a student of Dumont, Thomas, Allouard and Ponscarme. In 1893 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1898 he won a first prize at the Salon and a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Coudray died in 1932.

In 1923 he won the Premier Second Prix de Rome and a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes D?corateurs. Renard died in 1974

This work is attributed to Maurice Charpentier-Mio in the Paris Mint Catalogue, but that is an error. Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, medalist, sculptor and craftsman was born in 1856. He with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty and others was responsible for the resurgence of medallic art in France in the late 19th century. Charpentier died in 1909. ?

Godefroid Devreese was one of Belgium’s most prolific medallists. He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. ? ? Godefroid Devreese was one of Belgium’s most prolific medallists. He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels.
