1927, France. CENTENARY OF THE BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT RUN BY VICTOR AND THERESE CANALE. By H. Dropsy. Bronze hexagonal 53mm. Obv: Facing half-figure of Victor Canale holding a large medal. Rev: Two circular compartments, one showing a medal engraver, the other: coins and tools. $125. Sorry, SOLD ————– This medal was struck to commemorate the centenary of the firm run by Victor and Th?r?se Canale. It was established by C. Durant at 37 quai de l?Horloge, Paris, in 1827. It was later taken over by Auguste Godard and in 1912 was taken over by Victor Canale. The firm issued medals and plaquettes by such notables as Roty, Dropsy, Schwab and Desvignes———- Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Rev: A square compartment and produce. Cat. Gen. vol.. 3 209/F. In a contemporary, circular cardboard box. Extremely fine. $175. Sorry, SOLDAlbert Herbemont was born in 1874 and was a pupil of Ponscarme. He won a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1923. He was a founding member of the Soci?t? Fran?ais des Amis de la M?daille. Herbemont died in 1953.

Extremely fine. $90 Louis Virion, French sculptor, medallist and ceramist, was born at Ajaccio (Corsica) in 1865. He studied under Aub? and Charles Gautier. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and won a third class medal in 1895. He won a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition in 1900. Virion died in 1946.

France. TOUT HOMME EST LE GARDIEN DE SON FR?RE. (Every Man Is His Brother?s Keeper). By Louis Muller. Bronze 80mm. OBV: A youth offering a bowl to a figure lying in bed. REV: A nude male helping another climb a rock. $90. Sorry, SOLD (September, 2024). ——– Louis Muller was born on February 22 1902 at V?nissieux into a family of modest means. He started to work with metals at the age of 13. He was apprenticed to various jewelers and silversmiths in Lyon. After completing his national service in 1923 he entered the atelier of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larriv? at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. He later moved to Paris where he studied under Sculpture under Henri Bouchard and medal engraving under Henry Dropsy and Aguste Patey. Muller also studied at the private academy established by Andr? Lavrillier. In 1929 he won the second prix de Rome in medal engraving and in 1932 won the premier prix de Rome. Muller worked for the Monnaie de Paris and for various private makers of medals. He died at Antony in 1957.
