1930, Germany. RHINELAND FREE AGAIN. By Karl Goetz. Silver 36mm. Obv: A giant kneeling female with four men before her. Rev: A river god standing in the Rhine. Kienast 450. Nearly extremely fine. $75. Sorry, SOLD Karl Goetz was born at Augsburg in 1875. He attended the Art School in Augsburg, and later the art schools in Dresden, Leipzig , Berlin and Dusseldorf. He spent five years in Paris and later moved to Munich, where he settled in 1904. Goetz was a prolific medallist, most noted for his satirical works, especially those of World War I. Goetz died in 1950.

Catalogue G?n?rale Illustr? vol. 3 380/C, Niggl 538. $100. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2022) ————- Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a Duexi?me second Grand Prix in 1914, a Premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the completion in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins. He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Turin died in 1968.

1927, France. CENTENARY OF THE BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT RUN BY VICTOR AND THERESE CANALE. By H. Dropsy. Bronze hexagonal 53mm. Obv: Facing half-figure of Victor Canale holding a large medal. Rev: Two circular compartments, one showing a medal engraver, the other: coins and tools. $125. Sorry, SOLD ————– This medal was struck to commemorate the centenary of the firm run by Victor and Th?r?se Canale. It was established by C. Durant at 37 quai de l?Horloge, Paris, in 1827. It was later taken over by Auguste Godard and in 1912 was taken over by Victor Canale. The firm issued medals and plaquettes by such notables as Roty, Dropsy, Schwab and Desvignes———- Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Sorry, SOLDAlbert Herbemont was born in 1874 and was a pupil of Ponscarme. He won a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1923. He was a founding member of the Soci?t? Fran?ais des Amis de la M?daille. Herbemont died in 1953.

Extremely fine. $90 Louis Virion, French sculptor, medallist and ceramist, was born at Ajaccio (Corsica) in 1865. He studied under Aub? and Charles Gautier. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and won a third class medal in 1895. He won a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition in 1900. Virion died in 1946.
