Dassier's Kings and Queens

In 1731, Jean Dassier of Geneva published a remarkable series of 34 medals depicting the Kings and Queens of England. These medals were initially sold in England at prices of 6 guineas for bronze and 15 guineas for silver. A third variation was available in damascened bronze, featuring bronzed fields with gilded relief.

Around 1820, Sir Edward Thomason acquired the dies and reissued the medals. The earlier medals are distinguishable by their slightly thinner flans, beveled edges, and a more subdued finish. In contrast, later issues often feature more reflective surfaces and variations in patination, though they may display signs of die wear and defects. Cast copies of the struck medals also exist, typically smaller in size and of lower quality.
